Icon of Archangel Michael — "Who Is Like God?", Large Format

This hagiography depicts Archangel Michael, sword in hand, whose name in Hebrew — "Mi-ka-El" — means "Who Is Like God?" According to tradition, during the fall of the rebellious angels, Michael rallied the angelic orders that remained faithful and urged them with the cry "Let us attend" (Proshomen), preserving their loyalty. For this reason, God is said to have placed him at the head of the angelic orders.

This biblical figure also appears to Abraham to announce the trial of Isaac's sacrifice, and delivers Jacob from Esau's threatening hands. In the New Testament, the Archangel announces the second coming of Christ, and according to the Revelation of Saint John, leads the heavenly hosts in the battle against Satan. The Orthodox Church celebrates his Synaxis on November 8 each year.
