Who celebrates their name day today in the Orthodox calendar?
In Orthodox Christian tradition, every day of the year is dedicated to one or more saints. Knowing which saint is commemorated on any given date tells you whose name day it is — whether it is George on April 23, Mary on August 15, or Nicholas on December 6. This tool lets you look up any date instantly.
What is an Orthodox name day?
An Orthodox name day is the feast day of the saint whose name you bear. When an Orthodox Christian is baptised, they receive the name of a saint who becomes their personal patron — protector and intercessor before God. In Greek, Romanian and Serbian families, the name day is often celebrated more solemnly than a birthday. The traditional greeting is Χρόνια Πολλά in Greek, or La mulți ani in Romanian — "many years".
New Calendar and Old Calendar traditions
The Greek, Romanian and Bulgarian churches follow the Revised Julian (New) Calendar. The Russian and Serbian churches follow the Old Julian Calendar, which runs 13 days behind the civil date. Saint George is celebrated on April 23 by Greeks and Romanians, and on May 6 by Russians and Serbs. Select your tradition above to see the correct dates for your church.
