The Thrill of Orthodoxy: Rediscovering the Adventure of Christian Faith

"The Thrill of Orthodoxy" is a work of general Christian apologetics, not a book of Eastern Orthodox theology. This is worth stating clearly: the word "orthodoxy" here is used in the broad sense of "historic, creedal Christianity" shared across many Christian traditions, not in the sense of the Orthodox Church.

The author, Trevin Wax, is an evangelical Protestant theologian, and the book is published by InterVarsity Press, an evangelical publisher. It draws on the three great ecumenical creeds — the Nicene Creed, the Apostles' Creed, and the Athanasian Creed — shared by many Christian traditions, including Eastern Orthodoxy, to argue that historic Christian faith is livelier and richer than contemporary doctrinal drift.

This common ground — the Trinity, the full divinity and humanity of Christ — makes the book relevant reading for any Christian interested in apologetics and the history of doctrine. What it does not cover are the elements specific to Orthodox theology: apostolic succession, sacramental and liturgical life, veneration of the Theotokos and the saints, icons, or the Church's living Tradition alongside Scripture.
